My initial intention for this book cover was to celebrate my love of hand-lettering and create a solution that relied entirely on typography and no pictorial imagery. After countless rounds of lettering and digging through hand-lettered ephemera, I began to feel like I was drifting further from the spirit of the story. What emerged instead were flourishes, something that only came to life through a lot of practice with calligraphic strokes. For the unicorn, I drew inspiration from cave paintings and Islamic art depicting Mongolian horseback riders, aiming to craft a graphic image that felt both rooted in history and charged with a sense of fantasy.
